Dear Colleagues,

As you are probably all aware, there have been transportation
strikes as well as University
strikes in Paris over the past three weeks. I want to assure you that
the Sweet Briar College
Junior Year in France has addressed this situation and has made
accommodations
for your students due to these strikes. We have hired extra professors
to teach courses
cancelled by the Paris universities and have also asked our JYF
"Consultants" to give
make up courses in various disciplines. Our SBC JYF in-house courses
have never been
cancelled (even tho' many of our professors came to work by bicycle or
by foot!) We have reassured
JYF students that if they attend these extra classes and do the work
required, they will receive a SBC JYF transcript at the end of the
semester.
As of today, Paris IV and Paris VII are open. Paris III is still
closed. However, the President of Paris
III announced this evening that it will reopen tomorrow. SBC JYF
students have been issued letters to
give or send to their Sorbonne professors requesting that their final
grades be sent to the Paris office.
Our JYF students are to be commended for their patience and
tenacity. I understand that this
difficult situation has bonded them closely and that they are
fascinated by this first-hand experience of
French politics in action.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions
and/or concerns.

Best regards,

Margaret Scouten
Director
