Dear colleagues,
I wanted to give you an update of the JYF program. On January 17,
2002, I accompanied 17 spring semester students to Paris. The
orientation program in Paris was quite successful. The 2002-2002
Resident Director, Dr. John Lambeth and I decided to hire our own SBC
JYF professors to
teach the methodology and language courses. This proved to be an
excellent way of including our professors who are already familiar with
our students' weaknesses and needs.
The new students also were able to meet these professors firsthand and
then
decide later whether to register for their courses in the spring.
We hosted a "Welcome to Paris" dinner for the new students along
with the "big brother /big sister" (first semester students) as well as
a Vin d'honneur at the end of the second week for all students on the
program. In this way, the spring students did not feel isolated and
met others on the program. They all had a grand time . Photos of
this event will
appear in the next Newsletter. Mme Carol Denis stated that this spring,
the new
students appear to be so much more integrated and have fewer problems.
We also organized a trip to Chartres for the newcomers with a guided
tour conducted by Dr. Malcolm Miller, a renowned lecturer who
specializes in cathedral architecture. He is British and has lived in
Chartres for over
40 years. The students were very impressed with his 1 1/2 hour
presentation.
Madame Suzanne Oswald took them on a guided walking tour of the Ile
Saint Louis. She is one of the top professors on the program (teaches
the course entitled Histoire de Paris à travers les monuments) and
students are
always amazed at her knowledge. Mme Oswald is also a delightful
personality and wonderful speaker.
All in all, orientation seems to have gone smoothly . We are
already making plans on how to improve for next spring. Any suggestions
and/or
recommendations would be appreciated.
Lastly, I interviewed candidates for Madame Carol Denis' position
as Directrice adjointe since she will retire in July after 20 years in
this position,
We have selected a professional who has worked in this role for another
program for over 15 years. She has a great deal of experience and is a
delightful person. Madame Carol Denis has accepted to accompany the
students from New York to Paris on September 1, 2002 and will work
with the new Directrice during the orientation month in Tours. I am
confident that this will be a smooth transition.
Presently, we are receiving applications for 2002-2003. It appears
that it will be a smaller group next fall due to the poor economy and
fear of
terrorism. So far, we have about 70 applications which is an
acceptable number. All study abroad programs are experiencing the
same decline in enrollment due to unrest throughout the world . I have
extended our application deadline this year from February 22 to March
15 to accommodate those who are uncertain about study abroad,
2002-2003. Please convey this to your students that it is not too late
to apply to SBC JYF if still interested.
I am very pleased to announce that Dr. John Lambeth has accepted to
remain a second year in the position of Resident Director. This will
certainly add continuity to
this year's program. I also wish to reiterate that this year's group
has been extremely
positive and upbeat. I do believe that the renovation and cheerier
decor has helped
with this attitude as well as the better weather this year. Dr. Lambeth
and Carol
Denis also are delighted to report that many more students concentrate
on speaking French only when in the SBC location. Humorous signs
have been placed throughout the location to reinforce this requirement.
Thank you once again for your help in advising students about JYF.
I understand that it entails a great deal of time and patience. I hope
to see several of you at NAFSA in May. Will keep you posted .
Wishing you a pleasant spring.
Sincerely yours,
Margaret Scouten
