Dear colleagues,

I wanted to give you an update about the 2002-03 JYF. Unfortunately, our
December Newsletter written by students might not be sent before the holidays.
We are trying our best.

The 2002-2003 JYF participants arrived in Paris on September 2, 2002,
accompanied by Dr. James Alouf, Chair of the Education Department at SBC and by
Dr. Julia Depree, Professor of French at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta.
The orientation program in Tours was very successful and students seemed happy
with the methodology, pronunication and grammar classes. Excursions were
planned to castles along the Loire River: Blois , Chenonceaux, and Chambord.
On September 27, students were taken by bus (stop along the way in Chartres to
visit the famous cathedral and to have lunch)to meet host families in Paris
and to begin a more cosmopolitan cultural experience.
The past three months in Paris have been extremely busy: registering for
classes, meeting new friends, adjusting to life in a foreign country. The annual
Thanksgiving Dinner took place in a charming Parisian restaurant which
students seemed to appreciate. This year, four faculty members from Sweet Briar
College attended the dinner as well as four French language assistants who
studied in US colleges last year. This time of year, students abroad begin to
miss home for the holidays. However, all in all, they seem to be coping with
their new lifestyle and realize that the semester has flown by very quickly.
First semester students will return to US on January 16 (only 5 out of 63 )
I will accompany 27 spring semester students to Paris on January 17, 2003.
My staff in the Paris office and I have been busily planning the orientation
program for the spring students.
If you have any questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact
me. Also, if you are planning to visit Paris in the near future, please let me
know so that we arrange a meeting and meal with the Paris staff. It was a
pleasure seeing some of you at the Nafsa Region VIII meeting in Bethseda, MD
in November.
Wishing you all very happy holidays.

Sincerely,

Margaret Scouten
