Dear Colleagues,

I just returned from Paris late Monday night Sept 10 at Washington
, Dulles Airport.
I am now back in the Sweet Briar College office if you would like to
contact me .

In light of the recent attacks on the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon, I wanted
to give you on update on the SBC JYF program. The group of 84 students
are currently in the city of Tours (about 3 hours by car from Paris).
Classes began
last week at the Institut de Touraine and students are staying with
host families. They had their first excursion to Blois last Friday
where they visited a wine
cave, had a lovely outdoor picnic and attended the sound and light show
at Blois Castle . The excursion was very successful and appreciated
by the students.

Yesterday, I asked Dr. John Lambeth, this year's Resident Director
2001-2002 (professor of French at Washington and Lee University,
Virginia), to hold a
meeting with our students to discuss the tragic events in the US. This
meeting was held at 10:00 a.m. today (Paris time).
The Director of the Institut de Touraine as well as the Mayor of Tours
attended the meeting. The Institut de Touraine has provided a room
with several
telephones for our students to contact relatives and friends. A large
screen TV (with CNN) is set up in the library for our students. We are
also providing
counseling for any student who
will need professional help. At this time, it is too early to tell who
will need this service.
Some students attended a prayer service in the courtyard of the
Institut de Touraine
with American students from other programs in Tours.

Please let me reassure you that our JYF students are in an
extremely safe and well protected environment. Dr. John Lambeth, and
Madame Carol Denis (20
years experience with our program) have been instructed to carefully
supervise our students and provide them with emergency contact
information . They have
registered our students with the U.S. Embassy.

For your information, our office telephone number in Tours is :

    011-33-2-47-05-31-49 (Secretary Alexandra Mardesic)

In case of emergency only , the cell phone of Dr. John Lambeth is

011-33-6-62-39-16-72

Students have been given the cell phone numbers of Dr. Lambeth and
Madame Carol Denis .

I am confident that your students are in excellent hands. Please do
not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions and/or concerns.

Sincerely,

--
