Dear colleagues:

An information update regarding the Sweet Briar College Junior Year in
France:

  1) Departure date for Fall semester and Academic year students:
      Sunday, September 2, 2001 from JFK, NY,NY
      Air France Flight # 7 at 7:45 p.m ; Paris Arrival : 8:50 a.m. on
Monday, Sept 3, 2001

Students will be met at Charles De Gaulle Airport by Dr. Margaret
Scouten, JYF Director (as of July 1, 2000),
Dr. John Lambeth, Resident Director for 2001-2002 (Assoc. Professor of
French from Washington and Lee
University, VA) and Ms. Lucy Hervier, Administrative Assistant from the
Paris Office. We will accompany the
students by bus to the charming city of Tours, in the Loire Valley,
where they will meet Mme Carol Denis, Assistant
to the Resident Director and their host families. The following day,
the 4 week orientation program in Tours will begin.
At the end of the orientation program, they will be transported to
Paris during the first week of October.

  2) Fall semester : September 2, 2001 - January 17, 2002
Fall semester students should be reminded that the fall semester in
Paris does not end until January 17, 2002.
Please impress upon your fall semester students that professors at
Paris universities do not administer early final
exams. If a student decides to leave early, he will receive a 0 on
his final exam (which is often the only grade
given for a course). I appreciate your cooperation in this important
matter.

 3) Spring semester: January 17, 2002-May 31, 2002
Spring departure flight time has not been finalized. However, the
departure will be out of Washington, Dulles airport
and JYF will limit the group to 15 students with a minimum of 3.5
gpa. This gpa is required since these students
will be entering Paris universities in the middle of the year. We
want them to succeed. Spring semester Orientation
        will be held in Paris.

  4) Fees for 2001-2002 remain the same as for 2000-2001: $22,750 for the
full year; $13,520 for the fall
or spring semester. This fee is guaranteed and will not be subject
to increases or rebates arising from
exchange rate fluctuations. Please consult our web site or the
catalogue for the description of the fee coverage
plus estimates of other expenses not included in the fee (such as
books, certain meals, public transportation
passport, photographs, visa, personal expenses, etc.)

Thank you for advising your students about JYF and for encouraging them
to meet our application deadlines:
         February 20, 2001 - Academic year
         March 1, 2001 - Fall semester only
         October 15, 2001 - Spring semester only

To date, we have a very large applicant pool and have accepted
approximately 90 fall and academic year students.
Letters of acceptance are being sent this week. Will keep you posted.
If you have any questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to
contact me. You and your students
may visit our web site at <www.jyf.sbc.edu>
I would sincerely appreciate meeting you in the near future, if I have not
yet visited your campus.
Please advise the Virginia JYF office about 2001 dates for Study Abroad
Fairs on your campus. I would
be delighted to discuss the Sweet Briar College Junior Year in France
program with your students.

   Thank you.

   Sincerely,

   Margaret Scouten
