                                                   April 4, 2006

Dear JYF participants,

I am addressing you in English since I will also be sending this
letter to your
Study abroad advisors and parents. As many of you know, SBC JYF announced
its first new summer program to begin on June 4 - July 2.
Unfortunately, in light of the mass demonstrations
and strikes and the national news coverage about these events, American
students have not responded to summer
programs in France. They do not realize it is still very safe in Paris.
They also may not realize that the SBC JYF Summer Program will be held
at our SBC JYF location and that courses will be taught by some of our
own dedicated and loyal JYF professors. Therefore, we do not rely on the
Sorbonne for classrooms or professors.
I am sorry that these events are occurring due to the confusion
and extra work for
all concerned. However, it is also a historic moment in France and you
are witnessing politics in action. Please just heed the advisory
warnings sent to you by our offices to avoid the crowds.
I am disappointed that our new summer program is receiving so
little response. Therefore, I decided today to offer the new summer
program to any current interested JYF participant for ½ of the cost. I
am confident that interest will increase next year.
We will offer the one month program in Paris to current JYF participants
for the fee of $2500 for 4 credit hours (two courses) and $2900 for 6
credit hours (three courses). (Normally the fees are $5400 (2 courses)
and 5800 (3 courses) - also significantly less than other Summer
programs in Paris).
Professors are Mme Marie Grée who will teach a course in Arts and
Literature;
Mme Véronique Fabry, a culture course and Mme Délia Mellado, who will
teach the Atelier d'écriture.
This fee also includes Demi-pension (breakfast 7 days /week and dinner 5
days/week.), Medical insurance, USA telephone card and a métro card for
one month .
We hope that you would be able to stay in your current host family.
However, they will need to be contacted soon. You may consult the
summer program brochures in the office for more details.
We will need a minimum of 10 more students to apply in order for
this program to materialize. It would be wonderful to have you on board
in the month of June. It is a beautiful month to be in Paris. Plus you
do not have to pay the airfare to get there! If interested, please
advise by Saturday, April 14, 2006, date at which I must cancel the
program.
If you have any questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to
contact me by email at jyf at sbc.edu or call (434) 381-6109. You may also
meet with Mme Grée, Resident Director in Paris, this week for further
information.

Wishing you a wonderful spring break!!

                                      Sincerely,

                                    Margaret Scouten

Director
