She had hoped to recover once you arrived in Paris. However, this is not the case. She is extremely weak and will be unable to continue this semester as Resident Director. I know that she and Mme Lucy Hervier have advised many of you concerning your individual courses and academic problems. I am sure that there will still be changes. Please don't worry. This is the system in France. Our staff will make every effort to help you. As of Tuesday, October 13, Mme Dezon-Jones will not be in the JYF office. Mme Hervier will be substituting for her this week to continue to advise you and answer questions and/or concerns. However, SBCJYF is very happy to announce that Dr. Emile LANGLOIS, former Director of the JYF program for the past 16 years in Virginia , will replace Mme Dezon-Jones this semester as Resident Director on Monday, October 20, 2003. In addition to being the JYF VA Director, he also served as Resident Director in 1975-76; 1982-83; 2000-2001. He has very graciously accepted to help us out in this serious situation. SBCJYF is very grateful and fortunate to have this experienced professional working with you. Please be patient. De : "CitizenInfo, Paris" Date : Fri, 5 Mar 2004 09:12:08 +0100 Objet : Warden Message from the U.S. Embassy, Paris WARDEN MESSAGE March 5, 2004 As has been reported in the media, a previously unknown group called AZF claims to have placed 10 explosive devices along main railway tracks throughout France. AZF has threatened to detonate these devices unless the French government pays it a ransom of four million dollars plus one million euros. French authorities are taking this threat seriously after finding one explosive device under railway tracks on February 21. The French national rail company, SNCF, inspected its main rail lines March 3-4 and found no additional explosive devices. Rail service has not/not been interrupted, but SNCF has increased security. The Embassy recommends that American travelers to and residents in France monitor local and international news for further developments. For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement , Travel Warnings and Public Announcements can be found. Also, the Overseas Citizens Services call center at 1-888-407-4747 can answer general inquiries on safety and security overseas. This number is available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays). Callers who are unable to use toll-free numbers, such as those calling from overseas, may obtain information and assistance during these hours by dialing 1-317-472-2328. The Office of American Services at the U.S. Embassy in Paris is located at 2, rue Saint Florentin, and can be reached by telephone at 01 43 12 22 22 or via its website at www.amb-usa.fr. JYF always encourages students to use their hard won language skills to explore other regions of France, but I know that many students will be travelling outside of France during the spring holiday. I understand that a year or semester abroad is also a great opportunity to explore Europe. We remind all students that you are required to inform Dr. Marie Grée, Resident Director and/or Ms. Karen Parnet, Assistant to the Resident Director whenever you leave Paris. There is a notebook in Madame Parnet’s office for this purpose. You should record information about your itinerary and how we may contact you, should it be necessary, during your absence. Also, please carry with you at all times your green Emergency Card provided by our office with important phones numbers for Dr. Grée and Mme Parnet and Mme Hervier. Also, please carry your CISI Medical insurance card with you. Dear Parents and Study Abroad Advisors : Contrary to what one might think in these days of difficult Franco-American relations, our students do not feel threatened here in Paris. They live with French people and they all speak French, so they easily blend with the population. Although French people, like most other Europeans, massively oppose US policy in the current crisis over Iraq, this sentiment has not translated into personal confrontation with Americans beyond the verbal jousting that has always been a part of French culture. Needless to say, we continue to monitor the situation. We regularly receive security updates from the American Consulate here in Paris and, of course, immediately post them on the bulletin boards in our office. For any of you who might like to consult the travel warning site, I include the following URL : http://www.travel.state.gov/ Travelling, particularly to places where one doesn’t speak the language, quite naturally increases one’s vulnerability because unexpected situations or events inevitably occur. We encourage students to be especially vigilant in these times of international tension to be aware of their surroundings, to be cautious around strangers and to plan their itinerary carefully. As a general rule we also encourage students to keep a low profile and to not draw attention to themselves as Americans (American flags on backpacks, home university caps or t- shirts), and to avoid large gatherings of Americans or places where Americans regularly gather. Although the anti-war demonstrations here in France and elsewhere in Europe have been peaceful, such gatherings are always volatile situations and so we encourage students to avoid these demonstrations, or, if they find themselves in or near such a demonstration, to be especially vigilant. It is certainly not my intent to frighten parents or students in this message. In fact, I have found the students on the Sweet Briar Program to be thoughtful and responsible young men and women who have acquired a new depth of sophistication and savvy here in France. I wish you all a rewarding and a safe vacation. I remind you and your parents that the Sweet Briar office in Paris will be open during the entire vacation period. Our hours in Paris during that two-week period will be from 10 AM until 4 PM.
