We'd appreciate your passing the word, particularly to individuals associated with the disciplines noted below and campus publications. We are trying to return a kindness extended to us in the past. Special note: Non-painting spaces are also available for accompanying participants in all phases of the program outside of class. OFFERING: A unique plein air painting workshop to be held near the southwestern French bastide town of Cordes-sur-Ciel (1222), including singular cuisine, excursions and accommodations. Level of French and painting experience are not important. DATES: May 31-June 10, June 10-20 and June 20-30. Applicants should indicate if they have flexibility regarding the three sessions. TO APPLY: Review www.frenchpaintbox.com thoroughly first. Then complete and submit an application on the RESERVATIONS page (or make contact via mail@frenchpaintbox.com), providing at least one e-mail address reference. If those approaches are inconvenient, feel free to telephone us at 831-457-2001 in Santa Cruz, CA (U.S.A.) ANYTIME. Applicants should be available for a telephone interview within 48 hours of initial contact with us. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION: Enrollment and financial relief are NOT based on the usual merit considerations. Rather, our determination of how good of a complement an applicant seems to be for a given group is the main criterion for participation. We seek to provide the instructors with diverse profiles for each session, and one's ability to get along with others of different backgrounds -- while treading softly on foreign soil -- is important. Preference is often given to those with an interest in gardens. In addition, we would like to have at least one representative from each of the following disciplines: Architecture, Art History, Botany, Literature, Medieval/Renaissance Studies, Romance Languages, and Studio Art. DEADLINE: April 19, 2002 for the maximum in financial support; April 26, 2002 for general enrollment. Upon request, we can sometimes extend the deadline for those eligible for scholarship relief. Thanks for your kind consideration. In addition, copies of this letter are sometimes requested by college and university registrars who wish to check on our credit-granting policy. I hope you had a wonderful spring vacation and are now ready to tackle the academic requirements of the end of the school year. Each summer the administration of the Junior Year in France encounters problems with a few missing final papers and grades. This leads to delay or loss of credit. The following instructions are intended to avoid any such problems: I. It is your responsibility to check with your professors or chargés de T.D. what work is required in order for you to complete the courses and receive credit. You are required to take final examinations at the University and in other schools unless they take place after May 31 or the professors or chargés de TDs specifically request that you do not take them and give you substantial replacement work. Short oral examinations are not recommended because your colleges often require that you show your work to receive transfer credits. II. You must make sure that Professor Lambeth has the names and addresses of the professors who will correct and grade your work and that those professors have received grade request sheets. III. The Junior Year in France cannot accept incomplete grades. All work must be completed by the date requested by your professor, which must be no later than Friday, May 31, 2000. No paper will be acceptable after May 31 even if your professor gives you an extension. No paper will be accepted after you leave France. In case of serious illness or real emergency, or if a professor insists on your taking an exam a few days after May 31, only Professor Lambeth can approve an extension. He will do this in writing, with a completion date clearly stated. IV. Before handing in any final paper to a professor, date it, make a photocopy which you will leave with Professor Lambeth. This is the only acceptable proof that you have completed the work. You should know that every year some professors claim that they have not received final papers. Leaving a copy with Professor Lambeth is the only way we can convince them that the work was completed on time. Whenever possible hand in your paper to your professor personally. If you need to mail a final paper to a professor [we discourage this procedure], check his or her address carefully, send the paper “lettre recommandée” and keep the post office receipt. V. If you wish to receive a corrected paper or exam, please attach to the paper an adequately stamped envelope bearing your home address and ask your professor if he or she is willing to mail it. Note that insufficiently stamped letters will not be accepted by the post office. You may also leave with Professor Lambeth a stamped envelope before May 31st), and we will forward any paper coming to the office, although university professors usually do not forward corrected papers or exams to the Paris office unless you make a definite arrangement with them. Remember that in order to receive credits for courses at the Institut Catholique (except for Professor Gomez-Muller’s course), you must leave a copy of your work with Professor Lambeth VI. Finally, never ask a friend or your host family to hand in a paper to a professor or to take back a book to a library. They never do it. You will lose credit. You will be required to buy a replacement book for the library Copies of your transcript will be sent to you at your U.S. home address indicated on the form your parents and you signed last April, and to your home college as soon as all the grades are in, usually in July. You must have met all your financial obligations to the Junior Year in France [this includes fees, telephone bills in host families, unpaid fines for métro, bus or train fare violations, lost library books, bounced checks, etc.] before we can send your transcript to your college and to you. Remember that any bill will eventually come to us since our address is indicated on your carte de séjour and the police records. Any question regarding due bills can be addressed to Mme Denis. Any question regarding transcripts should be ADDRESSED TO THE VIRGINIA OFFICE during the summer. All transcripts problems will be settled by the Virginia office in early September. Finally, please do not book your return flight before you are certain of the date of your last examination. Air France may assess a financial penalty if you change your reservation. I hope that you are having a profitable year and I send you my best wishes for the coming weeks, your final exams and papers, and the summer. It is being issued to alert U.S. citizens to the need to remain vigilant and to remind them of the continuing threat of terrorist actions that may target civilians. The scheduled November 14 execution of a convicted terrorist in Virginia may trigger retaliatory attacks against American interests overseas. This Worldwide Caution expires on May 7, 2003. On November 14, 2002, the State of Virginia is scheduled to execute Mir Ahmad Kasi, also known as Mir Aimal Kansi, a Pakistani national, who was convicted in 1997 of the 1993 murders of two CIA employees. The potential exists for retaliatory acts against U.S. or other foreign interests in response to the execution. The U.S. government continues to receive credible indications that extremist groups and individuals are planning additional terrorist actions against U.S. interests. Such actions may include, but are not limited to, suicide operations. Because security and security awareness have been elevated within the United States, the terrorists may target U.S. interests overseas. Recent events include the terrorist attacks in Kuwait and Bali. We remind American citizens to remain vigilant with regard to their personal security and to exercise caution. Terrorist groups do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. Attacks on places of worship and schools, and the murders of private American citizens and other westerners, demonstrate that as security is increased at official U.S. facilities, terrorists and their sympathizers will seek softer targets. These may include facilities where Americans or possibly other foreigners are generally known to congregate or visit, such as residential areas, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels, outdoor recreation events or resorts and beaches. Americans should increase their security awareness when they are at such locations, avoid them, or switch to other locations where Americans in large numbers generally do not congregate. There is a possibility that American citizens may be targeted for kidnapping or assassination. U.S. Government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or suspend public services from time to time to review their security posture and ensure their adequacy. In those instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to American citizens. Americans are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest American embassy or consulate. As the Department continues to develop information on any potential security threats to Americans overseas, it shares credible threat information through its Consular Information Program documents, available on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov.  We are happy to do so but you must visit the Media Center first.  With this card, you will also be allowed to use the cafeteria at the
Alliance française where you can buy a hot meal at lunch for less than 2 euros. This is a bargain  and the food is quite good.

SBC JYF students may visit the Centre de ressources beginning Tuesday afternoon , January 14 until
Friday, January 24 , 2003.   After January 24, you will NOT have this option.
The Center is closed  on Wednesdays.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.
I will be accompanying the 27 spring semester students to Paris on January 17.

It is being issued to remind U.S. citizens of the need to remain vigilant due to a heightened threat of terrorist actions that may target civilians, including the possibility of attacks by non-conventional weapons. It also reminds American citizens traveling or living overseas to avoid demonstrations and provides standard preparedness advice. This Worldwide Caution expires on May 4, 2003. The Department of State reminds Americans that U.S. citizens and interests are at a heightened risk of terrorist attacks, including by groups with links to Al-Qaida. Terrorist actions may include, but are not limited to, suicide operations, assassinations or kidnappings. While conventional weapons such as explosive devices pose a more immediate threat in many areas overseas, terrorist use of non-conventional weapons, including chemical or biological agents must be considered a growing threat. These individuals and groups have proved that they do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. Because security and security awareness have been elevated within the United States, terrorists may target U.S. interests overseas. Private Americans should remain vigilant with regard to their personal security and exercise caution. Demonstrations in many parts of the world may have an anti-American character. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn into confrontational situations and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens traveling or residing abroad should avoid demonstrations and take commonsense precautions. American citizens residing overseas should follow the standard emergency preparedness advice found on the Department's web site at: http://travel.state.gov. A summary of the principal points follows: --Keep vital documents such as passports, birth and marriage records, medical, school, insurance and bank records in one readily accessible location. Keep copies of documents in a different secure place. --Ensure that passports and visas are valid and that you are registered with the U.S. embassy/consulate. Immediate family members who are not U.S. citizens or resident aliens ("green card" holders) should keep U.S. visas current, and apply for visas as far in advance of travel as possible. --Make or update a complete inventory of your household effects. --If you reside in a region where political unrest, street demonstrations or other temporary disruptions are common, maintain an adequate supply of food, water, and necessary medications in your home. Keep your car in good working order with a full tank of gas. U.S. Government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or suspend public services from time to time for security reasons. *********************************************************** See http://travel.state.gov/travel_warnings.html for State Department Travel Warnings ************************************************************ To change your subscription, go to http://www.state.gov/www/listservs_cms.html ----- End forwarded message ----- Margaret Scouten, Ph.D. Director, Junior Year in France Sweet Briar College TeL: (434) 381-6109 Fax: (434) 381-6283 Email: jyf@sbc.edu website:http:// www.jyf.sbc.edu From jyf-2001-2002-admin@ripley.sbc.edu Mon Feb 10 16:32:46 2003 Received: from sbc.edu (grendel.noc.sbc.edu [198.28.62.80]) by ripley.sbc.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id QAA23181 for ; Mon, 10 Feb 2003 16:32:46 -0500 Received: from [198.28.46.52] (account mscouten HELO sbc.edu) by sbc.edu (CommuniGate Pro SMTP 4.0b5) with ESMTP id 3357287 for jyf-2001-2002@mailman.sbc.edu; Mon, 10 Feb 2003 16:32:46 -0500 Message-ID: <3E481A7F.D76F7A53@sbc.edu> Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 16:32:46 -0500 From: Margaret Scouten X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.73C-CCK-MCD {C-UDP; EBM-APPLE} (Macintosh; U; PPC) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: jyf-2001-2002@ripley.sbc.edu Subject: [Fwd: [Jyf-2001-2002] Fwd: Worldwide Caution Public Announcement] Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="------------EAC12DD8B67166B5C3E7F58E" Sender: jyf-2001-2002-admin@mailman.sbc.edu Errors-To: jyf-2001-2002-admin@mailman.sbc.edu X-BeenThere: jyf-2001-2002@mailman.sbc.edu X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.8 Precedence: bulk List-Unsubscribe: , List-Id: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , List-Archive: This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------EAC12DD8B67166B5C3E7F58E Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; x-mac-type="54455854"; x-mac-creator="4D4F5353" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Encore une fois! JYF always encourages students to use their hard won language skills to explore other regions of France, but I know that many students will be travelling outside of France during the spring holiday. I understand that a year or semester abroad is also a great opportunity to explore Europe. We remind all students that you are required to inform Dr. John lambeth, Resident Director and/or Ms. Karen Parnet, Assistant to the Resident Director whenever you leave Paris. There is a notebook in Madame Parnet’s office for this purpose. You should record information about your itinerary and how we may contact you, should it be necessary, during your absence. Also, please carry with you at all times your green Emergency Card provided by our office with important phones numbers for Dr. Lambeth and Mme Parnet. Also, please carry your CISI Medical insurance card with you. Dear Parents and Study Abroad Advisors : Contrary to what one might think in these days of difficult Franco-American relations, our students do not feel threatened here in Paris. They live with French people and they all speak French, so they easily blend with the population. Although French people, like most other Europeans, massively oppose US policy in the current crisis over Iraq, this sentiment has not translated into personal confrontation with Americans beyond the verbal jousting that has always been a part of French culture. Needless to say, we continue to monitor the situation. We regularly receive security updates from the American Consulate here in Paris and, of course, immediately post them on the bulletin boards in our office. Karen Parnet and I also attend meetings with the consular staff to discuss security issues. The gist of the messages from the Consulate is that there is no cause for alarm here in France, nor indeed in the rest of Europe. There is no evidence of specific or imminent threat, to use the consular terminology. For any of you who might like to consult the travel warning site, I include the following URL : http://www.travel.state.gov/ Travelling, particularly to places where one doesn’t speak the language, quite naturally increases one’s vulnerability because unexpected situations or events inevitably occur. We encourage students to be especially vigilant in these times of international tension to be aware of their surroundings, to be cautious around strangers and to plan their itinerary carefully. As a general rule we also encourage students to keep a low profile and to not draw attention to themselves as Americans (American flags on backpacks, home university caps or t- shirts), and to avoid large gatherings of Americans or places where Americans regularly gather. Although the anti-war demonstrations here in France and elsewhere in Europe have been peaceful, such gatherings are always volatile situations and so we encourage students to avoid these demonstrations, or, if they find themselves in or near such a demonstration, to be especially vigilant. It is certainly not my intent to frighten parents or students in this message. In fact, I have found the students on the Sweet Briar Program to be thoughtful and responsible young men and women who have acquired a new depth of sophistication and savvy here in France. I wish you all a rewarding and a safe vacation. I remind you and your parents that the Sweet Briar office in Paris will be open during the entire vacation period. Our hours during that two-week period will be from 10 AM until 4 PM.
