Saturday, March 14 - Contra Dance in Floyd The March 14th Floyd contra dance at the Sun Music Hall features the Reel Shady band from Winston-Salem, NC. Contra dance is easy and fun and Reel Shady has remained a favorite band for almost twenty years. Band members John Calhoun, fiddle, Sue Stevens, piano, and Gene Anderson, banjo and guitar, have been regulars on the local scene since forming on Shady Boulevard in their home city. Music veterans David Bailey and Jim Matthews, adding mandolin, penny whistle, bass, and the musical saw, joined the group several years ago and support the melodic and rhythmic drive necessary to keep the dance figures moving. The group plays varied sets of lively Appalachian Old-Time, Irish, Scottish, French Canadian and contemporary tunes with the high musical energy required for an exciting and satisfying contra dance. Chris Youngblood from Floyd will teach and call a full complement of dances. Dances are held at the Sun Music Hall, Winter Sun, 302 S. Locust St. , Floyd. The dance starts at 8 p.m. but arrive early for a beginner lesson. Come as you are, wear soft flexible shoes for dancing, and the caller will teach each dance. Come to dance or come to listen - no partner needed. Blue Ridge Country Dancers contra dances are held in Floyd on the second Saturday of each month, September through June. Dance admission is $8.00. Listener admission $5.00. Sponsored by Blue Ridge Country Dancers www.floydcontradance.org ========================================================== 10. Fluvanna needs callers, musicians & dancers for special event Calling all dancers, musicians and callers! The Fluvanna Contra Dance has a great opportunity coming up to get the word out to the community about contra dancing. Come share your love of dance and music on Saturday April 18th at the Fluvanna County Middle School. There is a community children's fair running from 10 a.m. to noon that day. It would be great if a group of folks could commit to helping run a simple dance, such as a circle dance or simple contra. The Fluvanna Contra Dance will be given about 10 to 15 minutes for such a demonstration (specific time slot to be determined). There is also an opportunity to staff a table and talk to people about the dance. If you are interested in helping spread the word either by dance, music or speaking with people about contra, please email danceinfluvanna@gmail.com. Thanks for supporting the dance community! ========================================================== 11. Next. She suffered a broken arm and nose after someone bumped into her and she fell. All involved did a great job, keeping calm, calling the rescue squad, keeping her immobile, etc. There were two EMT's dancing that evening and they were very helpful. Genii was kept in the hospital overnight and Tim brought her home yesterday morning. She is in pain but Elizabeth Margutti reports that she seemed in good spirits.
