August 8, 2009 - Mike Seeger, whose love for traditional songs and tunes
inspired many other musicians - including Bob Dylan - to look for the rural
roots of American music, died of cancer Friday night at his home in
Lexington, Va. He was 75.

3. Weds., August 12 - International Folk Dance in C'ville

Charlottesville International Folk Dancers meets Wednesday evenings
at the Senior Center, 1180 Pepsi Place, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

 Join people of all ages to learn and do lively, haunting, or gentle
folk-dances from many different countries.

Teaching is from 6:30 - 7:15 p.m.,
and recreational dancing is from 7:15 - 8:30 p.m.

5. Important news about Fluvanna Contra Dance

It is with a sadness that I write this email.  As of right now I think
that the Fluvanna Contra Dance will not live to see a second season,
unless more people step up and help.

The date of the first dance, September 20, is quickly approaching but
there is no band and no sound person - only a caller.  I have sent out
several emails over the past few months asking for callers and bands
as well as assistance with sound for this upcoming season.  I thank
you very much, those few of you who have responded and committed to
helping keep Fluvanna going.

However, it just simply is not enough.  I have a band for October 4th;
a caller for December 6th; a caller for February 7th; and both a band
and caller for March 7th.  But there is no sound assistance for any of
these dances.  I also have neither band nor sound for the November
1st, December 6th, January 3rd, February 7th, April 4th or May 2nd
dances.

If you would like to see this dance become the community center it
could be, please consider volunteering your time and talents - either
directly with your in-person assistance or indirectly by letting
others know of the need Fluvanna has and encouraging them to
contribute.

Please, do consider what you might be able to do to help keep this
dance alive.  Fluvanna has very little local entertainment and few
opportunities for folks to get together in such a wonderful social
environment.  When the sun goes down in Fluvanna, the streets roll up.
 This dance could make a difference to the folks in Fluvanna, and in
our dance community as a whole.  The very first dance in Fluvanna a
couple showed up who were long time contra dancers (they actually met
at Greenwood!) but had stopped dancing because
Charlottesville/Greenwood was too far for them.

Thank you, again, for all you have done so far to help this dance
become a reality.  I appreciate the support you have shown thus far.
And, thank you for considering what you might be able to do to help it
continue.
