6. Saturday, Jan. 13 - Contra in Floyd
The multi-talented McKenzies, Woody and Marcia, arrive in Floyd for the next
contra dance on Saturday, January 13 at the Sun Theater. Depending on the
tempo and tune, Marcia travels with guitar, banjo, pennywhistle, bodhran,
mandolin, or piano - Woody with his famous fiddle, guitar, or octave
mandolin. Note that caller extraordinaire Tom Hinds is sure to have some
hot dances for this January winter dance. Come early; stay late.
"The McKenzies," a familiar flatfooting, musical duo and
accomplished,old-time musicians, are from Lynchburg, Virginia. Their
variety of musical styles and instrumentation, strong individual and duet
vocals, and their repertoire of lively tunes, familiar ballads, inspiring
sing-alongs, and humorous novelty songs all come together to create a unique
and energetic brand of entertainment. As former members of two clogging
groups, they occasionally incorporate some "flat-footing" into their
performances.
The dance starts at 8 p.m., with a beginner lesson at 7:30. Dress is
casual; wear soft flexible shoes for dancing; the caller will teach each
dance. Come to dance or come to listen -- no partner needed and all ages
welcome. Winter Sun Theater, 302 South Locust St., downtown Floyd. Contra
dances are held in Floyd the second Saturday of every month through June
2007. Admission is $7.00. See us on the Crooked Road, the Sun Theater
