8. Saturday, Feb. 10 - Contra in Floyd
No Strings Attached, described by The Washington Post as "one of the more
adventurous string ensembles today," has played together for almost thirty
years - enough time to hone their skills, riffs, antics, and world-beat
syncopation into a tight and very entertaining performance. They'll be
playing at the next Floyd contra dance, Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Sun Music
Hall. Bob Thomas plays acoustic bass, bass clarinet, and bass saxophone.
Wes Chappell is the multi-instrumentalist of the group. Harmonica player
Pete Hastings also doubles as the group's guitarist. Randy Marchany, plays
the hammer dulcimer and keyboards. Their talent has taken this local
Virginia band on European tours, as well as to the Kennedy Center and the
Pacific Rim International Music Festival, and a number of awards, including
a NAIRD Indie award for "Take 5" as best album of the year. Adina Gordon
from Swannanoa, NC is calling.
Floyd contra dances are held at the Sun Music Hall , 302 South Locust St.,
Floyd. The dance starts at 8 p.m. but arrive early for a beginner lesson at
7.30. Come as you are, wear soft flexible shoes for dancing, and the caller
will teach each dance. Come to dance or come to listen - no partner needed.
Blue Ridge Country Dancers contra dances are held in Floyd on the second
Saturday of each month, September through June. Admission is $7.00.
