5. Saturday, Dec. 8 - Contra in Floyd
Expect some lively foot fun on Saturday, December 8 at the Sun Music Hall
when Floorplay, the electric, acoustic Charlottesville musical trio of
Mary Prendergast on piano, Paul Rosen on mandolin, fiddle, and accordion,
and Aaron Lamb on drums, pairs with Dean Snipes, a Charlotte, NC caller,
for Blue Ridge Country Dancers' monthly, second Saturday Floyd contra dance.
Floorplay presents an up-tempo mix of contradance root music, French
Canadian reels,
good-time rags, Klezmer, old-time, and swing. Their repertoire is great for
listening as
well as for dancing. It's fun too, as Floorplay often infuses their solid
dance beat with
playful medleys. Being long-time dancers themselves, the band has an keen
understanding of what contributes to contra dance delight:
"It's all about the dancers and it's all about the groove," they say.
The dance starts at 8 PM with newcomer instruction at 7:35.
Come as you are, wear soft flexible shoes for dancing, and the caller will
teach each dance.
Winter Sun, 302 South Locust St., downtown Floyd.
Come to dance or come to listen - no partner needed - singles welcome.
Admission is $7.00.
See us on the Crooked Road (at Virginia.org) or
on our website: www.floydcontradance.org.
Upcoming Floyd contra dances: Jan. 12, Feb. 9, Mar. 8

7. Amazing dance flick on Youtube
For those of you who have high speed internet connections, check out
the following:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCFJ3LURCtc
This video is just to cool. The dancing and music is first rate and
this video may just get some national attention! Local dancer, Matt
Olwell, is the bald, silver headed guy with freaky makeup. The
band is the internationally known, all girl band, Uncle Earl. The dance
energy is absolutely infectious. Enjoy!!
