2. Friday, Sept. 8 - English Country Dance in Ivy
Charlottesville's English dance starts up again on Friday,
September 8. We're excited to have Pete Vigour, Mike Dunn,
and Lynn Mackey playing for the dance that night. Brad
Sayler will lead the dances.
The dancing begins at 8:00 with a short break for
refreshments part way through the evening. The dance is
located at St. Paul's Episcopal church in Ivy on
Owensville road, 200 yards up the hill from Duner's
restaurant off of US 250, about 5 miles west of
Charlottesville. Come alone or with a friend. We welcome
new dancers. The evening begins with easy dances, so it's
best for new dancers to arrive on time.
English dancing is the forerunner of American square and
contra dancing with similar figures. The music for English
dancing is what makes the genre so exciting. The different
rhythms, tempos, and moods combine to create an endless
variety in the dances.
Please join us.

5. Saturday, Sept. 9 - Contra in Floyd
SKYLARK at Floyd Contra Dance Sept. 9th
The first Floyd contra dance of the season is on Saturday, September 9, 8
p.m. at the Sun Theater in Floyd. Skylark, the musical duo of Marilyn
Hartman and Paul Fackler, pairs with Shawn Brenneman, caller, for Blue Ridge
Country Dancers' regular second Saturday contra dance.
Skylark plays a mix of New England, French Canadian, and Irish-American
music with Southern Appalachian tunes for a down-home experience. Their Cape
Breton repertoire is great both for listening and dancing and forms the
backbone of the tunes for a really danceable beat. Paul and Marilyn are
also noted for performing many of their original compositions.
Come to dance or come to listen - no partner needed - it's easy relaxed fun.
The dance starts at 8 PM with a beginner lesson at 7:30. Come as you are,
wear soft flexible shoes for dancing; the caller will teach each dance.
Winter Sun Theater, 302 South Locust St., downtown Floyd.
Contra dances are held in Floyd every second Saturday through June 2007.
Admission is $7.00. Visit us on the Crooked Road or at our Web site:
