6. Saturday, May 13 - Contra in Floyd
Blue Ridge Country Dancers hold their monthly community Contra Dance at the
Sun Theater in Floyd, Saturday, May 13, at 8 PM. A popular local favorite
Dot-Dot-Dash is the featured band accompanied by caller extraordinaire, Barb
Kirschner from Atlanta. Contra dancing is easy relaxed fun, and although
the figures are done with a partner, singles are always welcome.
Dot-Dot-Dash is a fine acoustic quartet playing Celtic, Appalachian, Gypsy
Jazz traditions and a whole lot more. We adored their energetic tempos and
instrumental improvisation so much, we invited the group to be our "house
band." They've performed at the dance several times this year to the
delight of the dance community. Band members are Joel Keebler, bass, Bill
Anderson, fiddle, John Hildreth, guitar, and Matt Livingston, mandolin. The
group regularly performs at Virginia and North Carolina contra dances and
has recently released a self-titled debut CD album.
The dance starts at 8 PM but arrive early for a beginner lesson at 7:30.
Come as you are, wear soft flexible shoes for dancing, and the caller will
teach each dance. Winter Sun Theater is on South Locust St. in downtown
Floyd. Come to dance or come to listen - no partner needed. Contra Dances
will be held in Floyd on second Saturdays through June 2006. Admission is
$7.00. See us on the Crooked Road website or at::
