4. Saturday, June 10 - Contra in Floyd
The Elftones at Floyd Contra Dance Saturday, June 10. Blue Ridge Country
Dancers hold their final dance of the season
on Saturday, June 10 at the Sun Music Hall with the fabulous
Elftones and NC caller Jim Roeder.
The Elftones' music is a blend of Irish, Scottish, Canadian, old-time, and
original tunes. This dynamic duo enjoys playing for contra dances, weddings,
parties, and just about anywhere people like to dance and swing and have a
great time. The Elftones are from North Carolina¿½Mara Beamish on violin and
Roger Gold on acoustic guitar. They describe their music as a blend of
Irish, Scottish, Canadian, old-time, and original tunes.
Roger Gold and Mara Shea started playing for contra dances in the mid-90s.
They quickly acquired a following of enthusiastic dancers enchanted by their
energy, tempo, and very danceable sound. Listeners frequently describe The
Elftones' music as "amazing, beautiful, energizing" and "I can't believe two
people are making all that incredible music--it sounds like 5 people up
there!"
Roger and Mara do much more than play all the notes really well. Both guitar
and fiddle play equal roles, and balance each other--this is not a typical
fiddle-with-guitar-backup kind of recording. Fiddle and guitar are
partners--the music becomes all the richer for the pairing
Roger lives in Swannanoa, NC, where he works as a luthier and guitar
teacher. Mara lives in Raleigh, NC, where she teaches violin and fiddle.
Spare moments find them traveling throughout the US to play for dances,
workshops, and concerts. Mara also plays for Scottish and English country
dances across the US and Canada.
The dance starts at 8 PM with a beginner lesson at 7:30. Come as you are,
wear soft flexible shoes for dancing, and the caller will teach each dance.
Winter Sun Music Hall, South Locust St., downtown Floyd. Come to dance or
come to listen - no partner needed. Contra dances are held in Floyd on
second Saturdays, September through June. Admission is $7.00; for
information see us on the Crooked Road Virginia Music Heritage Trail
